Hang Gliding - Aerotowing

Overview

Madison County Ultralights operates a trike powered ultralight for towing hang gliders aloft.  We tow from a 3,000' asphalt runway (at an airport with almost no air traffic), and gliders land on grassy areas on either side of the runway.  The grass is always cut short (no high-anxiety, tall grass landings here).  With no rotor-producing mountains for miles around, we can tow safely in any wind direction.  Large, open farmland surrounds the airport for miles, making it easy to head on an X-C flight in any direction.  Come tow with us when you want to make multiple flights (for landing practice, perhaps), when you want some guaranteed airtime, or when the wind direction just isn't good for your favorite mountain launch.  Aerotowing's also great for X-C record (even of the "personal best" variety) attempts, because you can easily re-launch if you sink out early.  Last but not least, you can come stay several days, make several flights, and only set up and break down your glider ONCE.

Convenience

With two tug pilots available, it's easier to guarantee there will be towing on any given day.  Also, because we keep our tug and other aerotowing gear in a hangar at the airport, there's no need to shuttle the tug or gear to another towing site.  Since we're often at the hangar anyway, we can often tow a glider up even if it's the only tow of the day.  There's a bathroom on site, too.

Trike Aerotowing

If you've towed behind a Dragonfly tug but not behind a trike, click here for some tips on towing behind a trike.  If you're new to aerotowing altogether, check out the good information on Quest Air Soaring Center's web site (click here, and click on "Aerotow FAQ"), and then return here for the differences of towing behind a trike.  (Quest uses Dragonfly tugs, not trikes.)
